Arlington Soccer's Sophie Moret organizes technology and clothing drive for Ukrainian refugees

When war broke out in Ukraine earlier this year, 12-year-old Sophie Moret hoped it would be over quickly. When it continued for months, Moret grew increasingly concerned for Ukraine and its citizens.

With her Bat Mitzvah coming up in March of 2023, Moret had the opportunity to choose a project that would embody the Jewish values of community engagement and compassion. After a lot of personal thought and moving discussions in her classes at school, Moret decided she would dedicate her project to helping the people of Ukraine during this difficult time.

Moret, who plays for 2010 Girls Blue, began working with the Digital Education Emergency Relief Initiative on their campaign to send technology and clothing to women and children in Ukraine. In early September, she began sending out letters encouraging people to donate what they could. Moret’s sister, Mia, who plays on the 2008 White team, helped out by creating hand-made backpacks to put the donated devices in. So far, Moret has collected “a ton of clothes,” and an impressive 50 devices to be donated. She was pleasantly surprised at the number of devices they have been receiving.

“I thought there would be maybe 15 or less… It was really surprising because they’re way more expensive,” she said.

The devices, Moret said, are what the Ukranians need the most. Not only will the Ukranians get the benefit of the device itself, but each piece of technology will be programmed with virtual education programs as well as mental health support. These resources will greatly benefit Ukrainian children, and Moret is grateful that so many people have been going out of their way to donate them.

Earlier this month, Moret invited local kids to join her in writing letters to Ukrainian children that will accompany the donations. She had around 20 kids show up to her house and support the initiative in a personalized and thoughtful way.

Moret is accepting donations through the end of October, and she would like to encourage anyone and everyone to donate in any way they can in order to support the people of Ukraine. If interested in donating to the drive, email Laurie Moret at laurie@lbmoret.com.
