Welcome to the first ASA Coach Newsletter.
You are receiving this newsletter because you coach
one of ASA’s 300+ recreational, teen and travel teams.
Over 4,500 Arlington and Falls Church kids rely upon
you to help them improve their soccer skills, have fun,
meet new friends, and learn how to win and lose with
good sportsmanship.

News for all ASA teams
• ASA Columbus Day Recreational Soccer
Tournament:
The first annual ASA Columbus Day Recreational
Soccer Tournament will be over the 2006 Columbus
Day weekend, October 7 & 8.
The Tournament is open to U9 - U14 neighborhood
recreational teams from Arlington and Falls
Church. Next year, Tournament will expand to
include more age groups.
Plan to enter your team, and volunteer to help
the Tournament Committee with registrations, field
monitor, advertising, etc. Contact Bob Waffle, 703

This tournament will be a major annual soccer
event in the Arlington youth sports community. It
reflects ASA’s commitment to providing a quality
tournament experience for all our players at a
price everyone can afford.
• DC United Ticket Packages
There are still on-the-field opportunities for
your teams at DC UNITED games. For example, the
"Fair Play" package allows ASA players to carry
the banners and flags onto the field as part of
the pre-game activities -- National anthem,
line-up introductions, etc.
There are only four regular-season home matches
left. ASA has discounted tickets for individuals
for sale via the ASA web site.

Three training opportunities
for Fall 2006 Season:
• Double-Goal Workshop:
The Coaches Double-Goal Workshop is this coming
Saturday, September 9, 9:30 - 11:30 am, at the
Thomas Jefferson Community Center.
The Workshop gives coaches practical tools to
both win games and develop the character of young
athletes. Coaches receive a Double-Goal Coach
certification card. The Double-Goal workshop is
presented by the Positive Coaching Alliance and is
jointly sponsored by the Arlington Soccer
Association and the Arlington County Sports
Division.

• Sullivan Soccer Clinic: Creating a
Competitive Team
Veteran ASA coach John Sullivan will give an
on-field coaching clinic after the Double-Goal
Workshop on Saturday, September 9. John will use
players to demonstrate how to run an effective
soccer practice, teach the three skills that make
a good soccer player and the two keys to creating
a competitive soccer team.
New and experienced coaches will benefit from
this two-hour clinic from 12:30 - 2:30 pm on the
TJ Upper field beginning one hour after the
Positive Coaching Alliance Workshop concludes.
• The Novice Coach DVD
The Novice Coach: An Introduction to Coaching
Youth Soccer is available on DVD to assist coaches
of U6's, U8's, and U10's. This 45-minute DVD was
created by US Youth Soccer. It features training
sessions and activities geared towards your
youngest players.
You club manager can loan you this DVD. ASA has
ordered an additional supply of the DVDs for this
fall season if your manager's stock is depleted.

The Arlington Soccer Association has soccer programs for
kids ages 5 – 18 in Arlington and Falls Church.
•
Neighborhood recreational soccer teams for all boys &
girls. • Teen soccer teams for all high school-age players.
• Travel teams for more competitive players selected in
tryouts. • TOPSoccer brings the opportunity of learning and
playing soccer to any boy or girl, 4 - 19, who has a mental or
physical disability.
ASA youth soccer programs are
sponsored in cooperation with the Arlington County Department
of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources and the Falls
Church City Recreation & Parks Department.
