Weekend Review for Arlington soccer coaches
                                Wednesday, June 4th, 2008
Observations from the weekend:

OK, so we got half a day of games in on Saturday before the weekend rains came!

I hope everybody is constantly checking the schedule updates.  With all this rain, we have really had to scramble with makeup games.  A big THANKS to Mary Bevis for all her efforts with that.

Team of the Week:
On Saturday morning, I had the chance to watch a great game at the Arlington Hall fields.  This week's Team of the Week is the u9 Boys Hurt's Hammer team, coached by Alex Gosztonyi and Coach Ldet

What impressed me most about this team is that the boys played with smiles on their faces, tried to do some wonderful things on the field and were always laughing and having a good time with their friends.  Congrats to this team and the coaches for providing that environment for their players.

I will also add that I really enjoyed watching the Boys u12 game between the Arlington Kiwanis and the Arlington Aces at Barcroft.  Perched in my VIP suite (aka: the rooftop of the parking garage) I watched 2 skillful teams play a very exciting game.  These players are enjoying the game and are developing some really good soccer skills.  Congrats to the players and their coaches.

Activity of the Week:

Coaches - here's some activities to try at practice.  I think your players will love them - and get some real soccer benefits.

1)  Juggling Combinations.  Give your players a sequence of touches they must use to try to keep the ball in the air.
example:  "foot - head - catch"  or  "thigh - foot - head - thigh - catch
Make is as easy or as challenging as your players need.
Let them make up their own combinations and share with the group.

2)   5 vs 2 Keep Away.
Inside an area about 15ys x 15yds (bigger or smaller depending on skill of players); have 5 players in a circle around 2 players in the middle.  5 players try to keep the ball away from the 2 defenders.
  • Whoever makes the mistake goes to the middle
  • Whoever has been in the middle the longest comes to outside
  • Ball must stay inside the square
  • Don't let the defenders get the ball - Keep it Away!
  • Stop & change if the defenders touch the ball

Coaching points:

  • Good 1st touch on the ball (away from the defender)
  • simple pass away from where the pressure (defender) is
  • move to help the player with the ball.  Get into a good position.
  • Defenders work together to cut off passes

3)  4 Goal Game.  Divide your group into 2 teams.  Make a game field big enough for the players you have on each team.  5 vs 5 up to 7 vs 7 is best.  If you have more, make 2 games. Field should be almost as wide as it is long.  On the field, make 2 goals on each endline.  Each team attacks 2 goals and defends 2 goals.

Coaching points:
  • If a team is attacking one goal, and the defenders have it covered, switch the ball over and attack the other goal.
  • Players on the team with the ball must always be moving to get into open spaces and in good positions to receive a pass
  • Defensive team must work together and shift back & forth to cover both goals.
