Refereeing with ASA

Become a Referee:

•    The Arlington Soccer Association invites all Arlington and Falls Church youths who wants to referee games to attend an ASA Referee class.
•    ASA Youth Referee Certification classes are held twice a year — before the spring and fall seasons. Referees must complete two 2 1/2 hour classroom sessions and a field practice in order to referee ASA recreational games for U8, U9 & U10 players.  This is NOT the USSF 8 course and is free to ASA members.
•    The minimum age is 13. There is no maximum, but ASA’s focus is on youth.
•    ASA referees are “center” referees and not assistant referees.

Referee Classes

•    ASA Referee class – the SPRING 2012 Class is set for March 28-29.  See course materials below.

•    IF YOU WERE A YOUTH REF PREVIOUSLY, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE THIS CLASS, BUT YOU SHOULD REVIEW THE MATERIAL AND RULES BELOW.

Please download and review the following materials: Workbook, Schedule, Being a Referee, plus all items under “Rules” below.  Please memorize the U8 game rules!

•    ASA Referee class materials for Spring 2012: ASA Schedule for the ASA Course | Workbook | Being a Referee | Rules (go to middle of this page)

•    You must print, study and complete the workbook BEFORE attending class.

Also see USSF 8 or 9 referee classes offered in the Virginia and DC-area on the Clinic Listing on the Metro DC–Virginia State Referee Program website.  To register for either re-certification or for the Referee Grade 8 class, visit the state soccer referee web site at www.vadcsoccerref.com.  Follow the directions.  It is a 2-step process.  One must first register and pay the USSF, and then wait one day while information is downloaded.  Then revisit the site and select the appropriate class.

Pay Rates for ASA Referees:

•    New ASA referees earn $14 per game for age group U-8; after successful completion of 8 games, refs can graduate to age groups U-9 and U-10 with pay increases for every 4 games worked.  There are rapid wage raises for dedicated referees, with top wages reaching over $30 per game and the opportunity to center U11 and U12 as Senior Youth Referees based on qualifications, age, experience.
•    ASA referees may be subsidized for USSF certification courses (USSF badge increases all pay rates by $4/game for the season after ref receives his badge).
•    There is no requirement for annual ASA re-certification but the USSF course is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
