Rules

ALL ASA REFEREES — You must review the current rules at the start of each season, print a copy of the appropriate Age-Group Rules and have them with you at the games. Please also keep the 1-page ASA U8-9-10 Rule Summary (below under Rules) handy for reference. Please NOTE the “Runaway Score Rule” is now a 4-goal lead adds 1 player, 5-goal leads adds a second player, but no more. If the lead goes down, take off a player; and please review offsides each season.

EDUCATION RESOURCES – How to deal with poor behavior

It’s important for officials of all levels to know how to effectively deal with coaches and other team officials who behave poorly during a game. Watch the video segment, Ask, Tell, Dismiss, to learn more about U.S. Soccer’s recommended approach for taking action towards team officials who fail to conduct themselves in a responsible manner.

In addition, an overview video for each law has been posted in the Laws of the Game section of ussoccer.com. This content is provided courtesy of FIFA and is intended to help viewers develop a better understanding of the interpretation and application of the Laws of the Game.

2010-2011 Referees of the Year and Harvey Snyder Scholarship Winners

ASA’s Ref of the Year Awards, for USSF 8 refs with strong reffing records who have established themselves as dedicated to ASA and its community, went to Samantha Pitcher and Koleman Lutz, both receiving a Casio Referee’s Watch.

Samantha is a 15-year-old junior at Yorktown, who began reffing in 2008 and will soon referee her 75th game. Samantha has graduated into our Senior Youth Referee Program so you will mainly see her reffing U11 and U12 games in the future.  Koleman, also 15, is sophomore at HB and was also selected Senior Youth Referee last season. He refs local travel games, but we hope to keep him focused on our ASA Recreation League, where he has done over 50 games since completing his first course in 2009.

The Harvey Snyder ASA Referee Scholarships are $500 scholarships for graduating seniors who:

      Have been awarded Referee of the Year, or meet the qualifications thereof
      Been selected for the Senior Youth Referee Program, and
      have contributed to the ASA community through playing and coaching or other volunteer work for at least 3 years

Mike Oliver and Alice Zytek are the 2010-2011 winners of these scholarships. Mike graduated from Yorktown High School in June and will be attending Georgetown University. Mike began his ASA career at age 6 with the Cubs, has played with 4 different clubs since that time, and often volunteered to help in the ASA Referee Classes. Mike completed over 80 games in his ASA Referee career.  Alice Zytek began to referee way back in 2006 and amazingly reffed almost 200 games for ASA!  She also graduated from Yorktown and is still deciding among many options for university study.  She first played for Potomac Kiwanis at age 5, and since played on several teams since including middle school boys’ team!  She has helped coach her younger sister’s team and holds an “F” coaching license.

ASA congratulates all of this year’s award winners, and welcomes all donations in support of the ASA Referee Scholarship Fund – please contact asareffing@arlingtonsoccer.com.
